India has more than 300 educational institutions in Ayurveda which offers undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral training programs. These institutions have produced more than 400,000 professional trained Ayurveda practitioners.
However due to inadequate clinical exposure during their education and in their professional career, Ayurveda practitioners face challenges in honing their clinical skills. But at the same time, there are also exceptionally skilled Ayurveda clinicians practicing in distant islands. This knowledge is under-utilized at the point of care as they are not properly documented or shared.
Published case reports are scarce in Ayurveda and when available are in the form of a narrative that makes it difficult for busy clinicians to read and learn from them.
If presented in an interactive web-based interface, clinical experiences of physicians can become a tool for continued development of clinical skills.

AyurCeL is a novel initiative in this direction by Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda.
The efficacy of Ayurveda as a system of healing is something that has been passed on through generations of Vaidyas and is based exclusively on empirical evidence. The lack of formal research data and publications in the field of Ayurvedic medicine is creating some discord in the medical community. The ‘pseudoscientic’ tag on wikipedia, the pressure from mainstream systems of medicine to ‘prove’ the efficacy of the sastra and the tendency to sideline the system in public health interventions are some instances that throw light on the dire situation.
The rigor of formal publishing is impossible for an average Ayurveda practitioner to take up on his/ her own. This is where AyurCeL steps in with a practical yet genuine solution to generate evidence based proof for the clinical efficacy of Ayurveda as a system of medicine. While serving as a clinical learning portal, it also addresses two major needs of Ayurveda academy, a module for post-publication review of published case reports and a pre-print server for fast track publication of first draft of case reports.
The Ayurveda fraternity stands to benefit hugely from these initiatives and it is our responsibility towards the Sastra to utilise these precious opportunities.
